How much should I feed my puppy?

How much should I feed my puppy once they have finished the transition onto raw?

Following on from our Weaning Paste, at about 8 weeks of age puppies will need approximately 5% to 6% of their body weight per day until they are fully grown, spread across 3-4 meals a day.

Once your puppy is fully grown, we recommend feeding 2% to 3% of their ideal body weight per dayThis should be reduced gradually.

Weigh your puppy regularly to ensure you are feeding the correct amounts.

As a feeding guide, use our Food Calculator which you can find on our product pages.

We recommend feeding your puppy Natural Instinct complete puppy recipes until your puppy is at least 75% of their adult weight.

We do not advise feeding the Working Dog Range when very young, as this range contains added vitamin C and could hinder your puppy’s natural production of vitamin C.

Can I feed my puppy bones and treats?

We have a great range of treats, perfect for puppies!  Our Beef Jerky is a popular choice for training, as are our yummy Lamb LitesYou will find further details of our all our Treats & Bones here.

We do not recommend introducing our small or large play bones to puppies until they have all their adult teeth.

Ensure that your puppy has been fed Natural Instinct for a month before introducing a recreational bone into their diet.

Always follow the three ‘S’s’ when feeding bones.

  • Supervise- ensure that your puppy is always supervised.
  • Separate- in multi pet households ensure that pets are separated to avoid conflict.
  • Size- You may initially have to teach your puppy to eat bones. Start with a bone larger than the size of your pet’s head to ensure it can’t be swallowed whole

Do I need to add supplements or other food to Natural Instinct raw pet food?

Our Natural, Working Dog and Cat food ranges are all complete recipes, so you do not need to add anything to these.

Our Pure range is a complementary pet food range for both dogs and cats and can be used alongside our complete foods or as a base for homemade raw feeding for dogs and cats.  You will need to add supplements if feeding recipes just from our Pure range to ensure it is complete and balanced; always follow professional advice from your vet or pet nutritionist.

Useful Delivery Information

Our minimum order weight for delivery is 5kg of food. This is to ensure the food remains frozen during transit.  Our system will not allow you to process an order for less weight.

If you do not have enough space to store 5kg of food, then we suggest you visit a local stockist or visit our store in Frimley, where you can buy less than 5kg.

If your puppy is transitioning onto raw food, the ideal transition should be trouble-free, with no periods of excessive wind, diarrhoea, or constipation. To achieve this, the best way to transition your puppy to the Natural Instinct diet is to transition over 7 to 10 days gradually.

Step 1

On day 1, take a spoon, the size of which will depend on the size of your puppy. For example, a teaspoon is recommended for a toy breed and a tablespoon for a large breed. Taking that spoon, replace a spoonful of your puppy’s current food with a spoonful of raw at each mealtime.

Step 2

Following on from day 1, continue to gradually increase the amount of spoonful’s of raw and decrease the amount of current food until your puppy’s feeding bowl is full of yummy Natural Instinct.

This is the only time you would mix a kibble-based diet and raw food together. Once the transition process is complete, we advise you stick to a solely raw food diet, including treats

How do I transition my puppy onto raw food?

What food should I use during the transition?

When can my puppy transition on to adult food?

A puppy needs to be fed 5-6% of their current weight. The feeding amount will need to be increased as the puppy grows, so it’s good to keep an eye on your puppy’s weight to ensure you are feeding the correct amount. This is a guideline only. Variable factors like lifestyle, appetite and temperament can all impact a puppy’s weight.

What treats can I use for training my puppy on a raw food diet?

We would always recommend using treats that are raw and as natural as possible. We have a great selection of suitable treats for puppies, whether that be for training or as a reward. We have some yummy frozen options, or for those struggling with freezer space, we have wide selection of delicious ambient treats, too!

What our customers say...

How do I store raw puppy food?

Natural Instinct raw puppy food and some of our treats must be kept in the freezer until required.

Your Natural Instinct order should arrive frozen. If the food has partially defrosted around the edges by the time you are ready to put it in the freezer, you can refreeze it safely. If on the rare occasion, there has been a delay in the delivery and/or the food, for some other reason, has arrived defrosted and you are unable to re-freeze it, please contact our Customer and Sales Support Team immediately, who will be able to assist you.

You should store Natural Instinct raw pet food just like you would keep raw meat purchased from a supermarket.

Remember, always keep raw meats at the bottom of the fridge.

How should I defrost Natural Instinct raw pet food?

Always defrost Natural Instinct's raw dog food in the fridge. When transitioning your pet onto Natural Instinct, we recommend you defrost one food tub at a time. Store this tub at the bottom of your fridge 24-48 hours before feeding.

Once a tub of raw pet food has been defrosted in the fridge, it should keep fresh for up to 4 days.

When fully transitioned onto Natural Instinct, depending on the size and breed of your dogyou might need to defrost more than one tub in the fridge at any time.

Whilst all tubs come with a fitted lid, it is recommended to place the tub on either a plate or in a plastic container to avoid any juice spills in your fridge.

When transitioning a puppy onto Natural Instinct raw food, we would recommend any of our Puppy complete recipes. These are suitable for puppies from 8 weeks old. If you aren’t sure, our Puppy Chicken recipe is a great place to start, but our Puppy Chicken & Tripe or Puppy Turkey & Tripe are great options, too!*

All our Puppy recipes are specifically formulated for puppies. We recommend your puppy remains on these recipes until they are at least 75% of their fully grown weight. This ensures they will receive the proper nutrients to support their growth and development.

We would always recommend sticking to the same recipe for the first 3-4 weeks. After this period, we encourage you to introduce our other Puppy recipes to prevent your puppy from getting bored or becoming too fussy.

If your puppy has any medical conditions, we recommend consulting your vet before starting the transition.

*Providing your puppy doesn’t have any allergies or intolerances to any of the ingredients. If you have a Dalmatian puppy, please contact us, as their feeding requirements may differ.
